Legend has it that this performance area is wherein, one night in 1916, artists Jean Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp started out yelling “Dada! Dada!” (da manner “there” in German) as a manner of protesting bourgeois attitudes thru nonsensical artwork. Some say it turned into the beginning of Dada, the anti-artwork motion that celebrates its centenary this year. Dadaism, the most vital artwork motion that has ever commenced in Zurich, had its origins at the mythical Cabaret Voltaire almost one hundred years ago. Today, the Cabaret Voltaire once again plays an imperative function in the present day Dada movement and also has a pleasant little upstairs cafe. The Dada artwork motion turned into founded in 1916 on the Cabaret Voltaire, on the Spiegelgasse in the picturesque Zurich Niederdorf, as a «protest against the insanity of the times». Artists, musicians, dancers and literati met on the Cabaret Voltaire and known as all of the prevailing art into question. From here, Dada came into the world – and a global art revolution became born. Nowadays, the Dadahaus, with its exhibitions, activities and bar, in addition to its small specialized lending library, is open to the general public.
