The Piazza del Campidoglio was set down on the summit of the Capitoline Hill, the most significant of Rome’s seven hills. It is the principal present day square to be planned in Rome. The piazza came about on the grounds that Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, coordinated a visit to Rome in 1536. Pope Paul III was so terrified by the condition of the soaked Capitoline Hill that he authorized Michelangelo to plan a square. This ridge piazza, planned by Michelangelo in 1538, is one of Rome's most wonderful squares.
