Pink stone ashlar obelisk, square-plan foundation, surmounted by 3 granite steps on splayed plinth; reassembled tooled grey stone panels to each elevation, celebrating Charles Forbes of Newe and John Forbes of Newe, and the building of the Royal Cornhill Asylum. Moved slightly from its unique area and committed to Sir Charles Forbes, Baronet of Newe in Strathdon, who bequested £10,000 to the structure of the asylum. Rose by open subscription of the inhabitants of the city and district of Aberdeen! The structure behind the obelisk was essential for the first hospital. The crazy person asylum in Aberdeen was established at Cornhill in 1800, so that the intellectually sick patients could be dealt with separately from different patients. Archibald Simpson designed the primary asylum working in the mid nineteenth century, which has since been supplanted and overwhelmed by later additions. John Forbes of Newe granted ?10,000 for the structure of the new hospital, so in memory of this John Smith designed the obelisk which was initially in St. Nicolas Churchyard, yet was moved to the Asylum and adjusted by Archibald Simpson.
