The establishment of the great white structure of Fort St. George is inseparable from the history of the city itself. Well known as the 'White Town', the sole reason for setting up the gigantic fortification compound was to build up a British fortress in the Coromandel Coast and the remainder of south India. With Fort St. George as a British settle, it was simpler to build up the numerous modest communities and towns in Tamil Nadu. The currently clamouring city of Chennai grew up around this stronghold during this time, under the British-gave name Madras. The glorious stronghold turns out to be the first in quite a while in the whole time or British principle in India.
