Spanning an area of more than 2.8 million km2 and populated with the aid of over 250 million humans, the Malay Archipelago covers a significant land location. Don’t pass over this session with traditional Malay musician and arts educator, Ariffin Abdullah, who could be sharing interesting testimonies on the cultured, philosophy, socio-monetary and geopolitical records of the location through its song. Participants may even get to play the fascinating interlocking rhythms of the kompang, a conventional Malay hand drum at some stage in the consultation! Sri Mahligai was founded in 2000 to address the vanishing art of traditional Malay track in Singapore. According to Mr Ariffin, Sri manner ‘grand’ at the same time as Mahligai refers to ‘palace’, reflecting how the group commonly plays at social capabilities and activities together with weddings and fairs. The ensemble plays a huge repertoire of Malay conventional track together with the dondang sayang, asli and zapin. Mr Ariffin is also the Festival Director of Gemadah – Malay Traditional Music Festival, Singapore’s first ever traditional Malay tune pageant in collaboration with the Esplanade @ Theatres at the Bay wherein nearby conventional Malay music organizations collaborate and showcase their craft.
