St. Andrew's Cathedral: A Neo-Gothic Jewel Amidst Singapore's Modern Skyline

It’s easy to place St. Andrew’s in the middle of the sleek glass buildings that rule the business district of Singapore. Pristinely white, the outside of the structure gleams in the blistering Singapore sun; the inside is blessedly cool and the various historic plaques and excellent sleek glass windows will stand out for you. The existing St. Andrews Cathedral church building was designed in a Neo-Gothic structural style, and was finished with Madras chunam. Three sleek glass windows are devoted to three figures in Singapore's first provincial history: the window at the middle is addressed to Sir Stamford Raffles; the windows on one or the other side to John Crawfurd, the first important Resident of Singapore, and Major General William Butterworth, the Governor of the Straits Settlements. These windows are situated at the apse; in any case, the first stained glass windows were destroyed during the Second World War.
