Wahat Al Karama

Wahat Al Karama, implies ‘Oasis of Dignity’, a landmark dedicated to United Arab Emirates’s heroes who died on duty— the country’s first war memorial. In a shallow fix of water, scarcely lower leg profound, a reversed impression of the pristine white Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque wavers under the late evening Sun. Georgette, my guide, informs me that the fake freshwater pool is depleted and topped off each day at 5 PM besides during this season—Ramadan. The site is across the street from the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque, purposely constructed close to the mosque so that withdrew souls of young fellows and ladies to whom the commemoration is devoted may always get prayers from the mosque. Designed by Idris Khan and introduced in 2016, Wahat Al Karama has a Pavilion of Honor, a Memorial and a Memorial Plaza. The falaj system, an old method of inundating fields in the area by acquiring water from the mountains, has been reproduced here as a design component to portray the progression of life. Wahat Al Karama is a spot that stands at the intersection of religion (Islam) and energetic pride.
